Earth Alert

1. Think of  a protected area in your country. 
- Where is it?
- What lives there?
- What problems has it got?
- What can tourists do to help?
Collect information using the Internet. Use your answers to prepare a short article for the school magazine.

2. Comment on the following statement:

The modern world depends on cutting down trees, but this causes major problems.

What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200-250 words. Use the following plan:
- make an introduction (state the problem);
- state your first topic giving one argument for and one argument against;
- state your second topic giving one argument for and one argument against;
- state your third topic giving one argument for and one argument against;
- make a conclusion stating your position.

3. Your teacher has asked you to write an article discussing the pros and cons of travelling in the city by bike. Write your article. (100-150 words)

4. Design an information leaflet for tourists coming to your town/city. Decide on three or four places to visit and collect information using the Internet. Write what someone can do/see there.

5. You have received an email message from your English-speaking pen-friend Mendy:
…Last week I attended an environmental workshop in our school. I was really surprised at how much influence a single person can make on the environment. What are the most serious environmental problems in your country? What does your family do to help the environment? Where can one learn some information about protecting the planet?
By the way, I went to the south  of England last weekend and the weather was awful…

Write an email to Mendy.

In your message:
- answer her questions;
- ask 3 questions about the weather in the south of England.
- Write 100-140 words.

6. You are on holiday and the weather hasn’t been very good. Send an email to a friend telling him about:
- where you are;
- who with;
- what the weather is like;
- what you are doing there.

7. Collect information using the Internet, then write a short article about an endangered species in your country. Write:
- name and type of species;
- habitat;
- threat(s);
- action taken.


Food and Health

1. List the words under the correct heading.

2. List which colour foods you ate yesterday. How do you think colour related to food? Look at the food list you made. How healthy do you think it is?

3. You work as a journalist for the local newspaper. Your editor has asked you to write a report on La Bocca di Lupo, a new Italian restaurant, assessing it in terms of food, service and prices and saying whether you would recommend it to the readers of the newspaper. Write 120-180 words.

4. Collect information using the Internet about a special festival in your country. Then, write a paragraph about it. Include:
- name of festival;
- date;
- reason;
- activities;
- food;
- any other special traditions involved.

5. Comment on the following statement:
Young people these days are eating more and more unhealthy foods. Some people feel that advertising junk food on TV should not be allowed.
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200-250 words using the plan:
-    make an introduction ( state the problem);
-    express your personal opinion and give 2-3 reasons for your opinion;
-    express an opposing opinion and give 1-2 reasons for this opposing opinion;
-    explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion;
-    make a conclusion restating your position.

I. Where does each person work? Complete the table with the words from the list: managing director, artist, lawyer, author, nurse, secretary, fisherman, translator, businessman, surgeon, architect, doctor, gardener, cashier.

- hours;

3. What are your holiday plans for this summer? Write a short paragraph about them.

4. Design a leaflet inviting students from abroad to spend a year at your school. Write about:
- subjects;
- typical day at school;
- sports and extra-curricular activities.

V. You have seen the following advert in the local newspaper  and would like to apply. Write your letter of application. Include: why would you like the job; why you think you would be good at it. (Write 100-140 words)

6. Read the extract from your English pen-friend’s email:

Write an email to your pen-friend. In your email:
