Special days

Exercise 1. Match the titles to the texts. One title is extra.

1. Children celebrate the holiday with their family members. They always have а special cake, which is iced with candles оn top. lf you are nine you have nine. They invite their triends and they have а celebration with food, games and music. The guests usually bring gifts: CDs, cosmetics, candles, T-shirts, books and photo frames. People often put balloons up in their houses or оп their front gates to show everybody where the party is happening.

2. lt is celebrated оп the first Monday in February. Everybody puts оп а mask and а red nose and wears funny clothes. Schools and kindergartens celebrate it with а party, meals and lots of fun. Children eat crisps and drink coke and fanta. Salt-sticks are also popular. Older people celebrate it with beer, sausages, chips and potato salad. There are long processions where people show off their costumes and throw sweets from decorated cars, especially in Köln, the centre of this holiday.

3. ln Malaysia there is а special celebration called Deepavali. This is а Hindu festival. lt iscelebrated between October and November. Hindus believe that оп this day the good forces over come the evil (злые) ones. During this time the Hindus lit their homes with tiny lights to show victory over darkness. These lights are in clay pots filled with coconut oil. ln the afternoon friends and families gather in their homes and eat lots of traditional lndian food.

4. lt is how people celebrate Jesus's birth in Sweden. Several weeks before it people decorate the streets and shops. Families decorate their houses in red and set up stars and candles in their windows. Every family has а green tree in their house. They decorate it and put presents under it. Some people sing carols and dance around the tree. AII the family members usually get together to eat а big dinner.

New Year is the biggest celebration in Russia. The belief is that the way you celebrate the New Year you will spend the whole year. So, everyone wants to cook special food, to dress up, to bе with their family and friends, to take photographs, to have fun and laugh until dawn.

Usually, people spend the New Year's Eve at home with their family. Only after midnight, when the New Year begins, young people go out to parties with friends.

Russians exchange gifts оп the New Year day. А lot of Russian children believe that Grandfather Frost, Ded Moroz, visits their homes at night. Не is accompanied bу his granddaughter Snegurochka who helps him to distribute the gifts.

1. The son tries many new things when he and his father go out to play in the snow. One morning Little Mouse wakes up to see а winter wonder - snow! Look at the history and modern customs behind the NewYear holiday. Readers will learn why chil­ dren in Nigeria stay in their houses until the old уеаг is over, why Romans throw old crockery out their windows, and how the holiday is celebrated in Times Square in NewYork City.

4. The book is а counting rhyme in which а child lists items of winter given to him bу his teacher. The book presents many winter-related gifts and activities. The list of wintertime activities is fun and familiar to young students at the same time. Kids and their reading parents will sing the melody of the traditional Christmas саго/ with pleasure.

Waterstone's is the Biggest England's shop of this type. lts first shop opened in 1982. lt has every type of book, from crime nov­ els to fairytales, and, of course, Harry Potter! The two main Wa­ terstone's shops in Central London have over 14 miles of shelves!

Му Holidays

After each term at school we have holidays. lt's fun to have hol­ idays, you сап do whatever you like, you don't have to get up too early, do your homework or think of trouЫes at school. Most of all l like summer holidays, they are the longest ones, though, when winter is snowy and frosty, 1 enjoy my winter holidays. l like skating and skiing, sledging and making а snowman or having а fight with snowballs.

Last summer we went to Sochi. First, we travelled to Odessa bу plane and from there we got to Sochi Ьу boat. We stayed in Odessa for three days. Our relatives live there and we stayed with them. We had an excellent opportunityto go round the city, to see beautiful monuments to famous people, museums and the Odessa Opera House.

We enjoyed our trip from Odessa to Sochi. The Black Sea was calm. Wesaton deck looking atthe sea. l liked Sochi verymuch. We went boating and swimming, lay in the sun оп the beach. ln the evenings we went for а walk or dropped in at а cafe to have ice cream or juice. Му father showed us the famous Botanic Gardens, we went hiking inthe mountains, and we saw the mag­ nificent Augura Waterfalls.

Summer Holidays

1. AII the people enjoy summer holidays very much. lt is а great pleasure to have а rest after the whole year of hard work or study. People like travelling during their summer holidays. Some people go abroad to see new countries, some people prefer to go to the countryside to enjoy country life far from noise and fuss of Ьig cities.

2. Some people like spending their holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseeing. Many theatres com­ panies соте to Moscow, for example, from other cities. They bring new plays. Му friend always spends June and July in the city. There are not so many people in museums or theatres.

The sea and sunshine that is what we look forward to every summer. Hotels at the large seaside towns are rather expensive,  so we usually go to а holiday camp.

4. Last year we spent our holidays in such а camp. Each day was full of small joys. We swam in the sea, lay in the sun, played dif­ ferent games. We had а wonderful time. The time flew very quickly. lt was а wonderful holiday.
